Lets Talk About Weight

Good afternoon ladies and gents. Bit of a different post today, slightly more 'deep' and 'personal' than my previous posts. It's taken a lot for me to upload this post because it's a very personal issue of mine and it's also something that I'm very shy to talk about because it's a real pitfall in the confidence department so please appreciate that.

I'm 18 years old, 5'7 and weigh about 7st 11lbs

I've always been skinny, I eat like a normal person would eat, it's just very hard for me to gain weight. I also want to stress that I do not have an eating disorder, just because I'm skinny does not mean I'm anorexic, that is a very series disease that I think that it's unfair to be given that label just because someone is skinnier than the average person. Since getting a personal trainer, I've found out that the body type I have is known as an 'ectomorphe', which just basically means you are tall with little body fat and a fast metabolism which makes it hard to bulk up as my body type is naturally skinny.

One thing that really drives me mad (skinny people out there may also agree) is when people make comments like 'you're so skinny!' or 'you need to eat more'. You wouldn't tell an overweight person that they were 'so fat' and needed to 'stop eating' because it's just not acceptable! I always find myself in a really awkward conversation when someone says 'you're so skinny' because all I can say 'Yeh...I know' - what else is there to say!?

As I've been skinny pretty much my whole life, I have quite thick skin when it comes to people making comments and I can usually just shrug it off and get on with stuff. But saying that, I am extremely insecure about my body (like I'm sure everyone is). For example, I've only just started becoming more comfortable wearing dresses on nights out and things like that. I also used to insist on my ankles being covered because I thought they were really boney and looked odd! People have this idea that being skinny is ideal but it really isn't and we have as much body and confidence issues as an overweight person.

I've spent about 5 years hating my size but recently I'm done with feeling sorry for myself as I've realised that only I can change the way I feel about my body by getting some meat onto my bones! That's why I've been doing much more muscle exercises (with weights) to bulk up, but alongside this I'm also eating more than I usually would and I have actually gained about 2lbs so far. It's not much but it's a start!

My goal is to be a healthy weight by the end of the year by gaining about a stone, so that I feel more confident, but also so that my body is in better health and shape.

I'm considering doing weekly or monthly updates on my progress, maybe including some of the workout routines if anyone is interested in some really great exercises that will help you tone up and get into shape. If you're wanting posts like that in the future please let me know in the comments. I would also love if anyone who is going through or went through the same thing as me to let me know in the comments below about your experience.

On a final note, if anyone has any questions then please comment and I'll respond, or you can email at emgeorgias@gmail.com if it's more of a private question you don't want everyone to see.

  1. I really enjoyed this post, I agree with the whole calling someone `too skinny` is just the same as being called `too fat`, it's just as insulting! Good luck with what your aiming to do, I would love to hear your progress updates :) x

  2. good on you for writing about this!
I always find it odd when the media call curvier girls 'real' girls ..as if slim people are not? The 'ideal' body shape changes throughout generations..when my Nana was my age she wished she was curvy like me to match 1950's fashion yet vice versa i would love to have her slim figure to fit our more androgynous fashion.

The bottom line is love the skin your in - which you are showing everyone - keep us updated!
    Thankyou!

  3. I absolutely loved this post! No matter what bodyshape you are people are always there to criticise and you can feel uncomfortable even if you are skinny, curvy or athletic. I love your blog, keep it up!
